From Stormie: The last 16 months have shown me how close and supportive our Birmingham community is. Seeing people come together during the pandemic to support local businesses and keep them open and employed has opened my eyes to a new side of humanity. I have spent the last year and a half watching one of our close friends battle and beat lymphatic cancer at the age of 28, finding out one week before he was finally set to get married. I have never competed in a competition or event like this, and I love the opportunity to give back to a community that needs it and support ACS.

From Quinton: I competed and toured with Stoli when I lived in Atlanta. Moving to Birmingham in 2018 was an eye opener to craft cocktails. Entering this event and winning 3rd in 2019 got me going again, and I want to learn from everyone around me. The craft scene in Birmingham is amazing. At Magic City Cocktail in 2019, I was beside the owner of Pilcrow, and it was great to watch the guests really observe the mixologists and get into what they were creating. The owner of the place that gave me my first 7 years of experience had brain and lung cancer and passed away in November 2020. I also had kidney cancer in 2016, so I know how scary it is. Participating in this event gives me the chance to give back to ACS and help our community in a tangible way.

From Rylie: The purpose behind the ACS’ Magic City Cocktail Challenge directly aligns with the mission of The Lumbar, using drinks to inspire our community to change the world. Being involved in an event that raises money for families affected by devastating cancer diagnoses as well as scientific research is something incredibly important to our entire staff and is an example of why The Lumbar was built to exist.

From Star: Cancer is very near and dear to my heart. My stepmom is currently battling stage 4 breast cancer. She has always been so vibrant and full of life, and cancer has stripped her of that. The more money for research the better.

From Nick: “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson. American Cancer Society is an incredible organization that, with your help, does just that. They go above and beyond to assist patients in many ways to make their lives easier in trying times, including things as simple as providing help getting to appointments, something that can prove difficult for many. This is why I am participating. P.S. F*** Cancer.

From Azul: My cousin, Monica, passed away at the age of 9 after an extremely short battle with leukemia, and it was devastating to our family. Fighting cancer is something that is very close to my heart as I have lost several family members to cancer. I love the idea that I could combine something that I am passionate about, cocktails, with a cause that is so important to me.

From Anthony: Fighting cancer is close to my heart, and I am still learning about all the ways ACS serves our community of cancer fighters and survivors. I am very excited to participate and support the community through Magic City Cocktail Challenge.
For more than 100 years, The American Cancer Society has been leading the fight to end cancer. With your support, we have helped usher in an era where more people survive cancer than ever before. By translating our research findings into action, we’ve seen a 29% decline in US cancer death rates since 1991.
